As a Shipyard Welder, your primary responsibility is to contribute to the fabrication, repair, and maintenance of vessels by proficiently executing various welding techniques. Your expertise in welding, attention to detail, and commitment to safety will be essential in ensuring the structural integrity, durability, and safety of welded components within the shipyard.
Duties and Responsibilities
Read drawings or specifications or use their knowledge of base metals to analyze parts to be joined;
Determine the appropriate welding equipment or method to be used based on requirements;
Set up components (cutting, fitting, grinding, etc.) for welding based on requirements;
Weld components using manual and/or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, flat, and overhead);
Complete CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) certifications when required;
Operate related equipment and tools which include but are not limited to forklifts, hoists, slings, grinders (portable & bench), cutting torches, hand tools, drills and punches;
Work in multiple environments from an indoor facility, elevated heights, which may include tasks performed on scaffolding, ladders, or other elevated structures, confined spaces within vessels, outside spaces with exposure to all elements;
Keep the shop/work site as a safe and clean environment to work in;
Comply with A.F Theriault & Son Ltd. Policies and procedures and Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Follow safety protocols and maintain, use and wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the area you will be in or the operation or task you are about to conduct to prevent accidents. Ensure potential health and safety hazards are corrected or brought to the attention of Management and/or Health and Safety Committee in order to prevent accidents in the workplace;
Perform other duties as required;
Ensure that materials on jobs in hand are being correctly charged to the proper job numbers, activity codes and/or others;
Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed to complete project deadlines;
Willing to go to apprenticeship training if applicable;
Participate in continuous improvement efforts.
Requirements
Proven experience as a welder required;
CWB welder qualifications considered an asset;
Diploma/Certificate from accredited post-secondary institution is considered an asset;
Be trustworthy, dependable and confident, have a positive attitude, have good judgement and be a role model for others;
Be able to work in a team environment;
Be able to read/understand blueprints and/or drawings;
Be conscientious in their work (attention to detail);
Be able to communicate in either English or French;
Be able to effectively manage his/her time and prioritize work as required; and
Be able to work overtime hours as required.
