MACHINIST

Full Time, Permanent


As a Shipyard Machinist, your primary objective is to contribute to the shipbuilding and repair processes by utilizing machining tools and equipment to manufacture, repair, and maintain precision components critical to the operation of vessels and shipyard machinery. Your expertise in machining processes and attention to detail will be essential in ensuring the quality and functionality of mechanical parts within the shipyard.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Read, analyze and interpret samples, blueprints, drawings, sketches, customer specifications and/or Company workplace instructions, manuals, etc. to determine output specification and/or to plan work procedures and tooling requirements per work orders, customers’ specifications and engineers’ drawings.

  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, grinders and select and grind appropriate cutting tools in accordance with the hardness, machine ability and other properties of parts or material to be machined.

  • Perform lay-out work, make sketches, calculate and determine dimensions, tapers, indices and other relevant data using shop formula and handbooks.

  • Take measurements, locate and mark reference points/holes, etc. for cutting or shaping and select appropriate machine (i.e., lathe) and position or load material for job task.

  • Check and take work measurements using measuring instruments (i.e., gauges, micrometers, calipers, etc.) following blueprint, customer specifications, engineering drawings, shop drawings, etc. and drill, scribe and trim accordingly.

  • Measure, examine and check output to ensure consistency with specifications, and in order to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances.

  • Interact with Supervisor and Shop Master by communicating and receiving instruction in the transition of the workflow and production work scheduling; to assess current material needs and/or to address any problems accordingly.

  • Perform routine maintenance on work equipment by cleaning and lubricating machine, tools and equipment to remove grease, rust, stains and foreign matter; keep tools, equipment and immediate work area(s) in a clean, orderly and safe condition.

  • Work in multiple environments from an indoor facility, elevated heights, which may include tasks performed on scaffolding, ladders, or other elevated structures, confined spaces within vessels, outside spaces with exposure to all elements;

  • Keep the shop/work site as a safe and clean environment to work in;

  • Comply with A.F Theriault & Son Ltd. Policies and procedures and Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.  Follow safety protocols and maintain, use and wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the area you will be in or the operation or task you are about to conduct to prevent accidents.  Ensure potential health and safety hazards are corrected or brought to the attention of Management and/or Health and Safety Committee in order to prevent accidents in the workplace;

  • Perform other duties as required;

  • Ensure that materials on jobs in hand are being correctly charged to the proper job numbers, activity codes and/or others;

  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed to complete project deadlines;

  • Willing to go to apprenticeship training if applicable;

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Machinist or apprentice is welcomed;

  • Proficient in reading technical drawings and blueprints;

  • Strong understanding of machining techniques and materials;

  • Knowledge of precision measurement instruments and gauges;

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail;

  • Strong communication in either English or French and interpersonal skills;

  • Strong mechanical aptitude;

  • Highly organized and experience working within deadlines in a fast-paced environment;

  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills, including written and verbal;

  • Strong data analysis skills, coupled with demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy of results;

  • Familiar with quality management and continuous improvement processes;

  • Welding and millwright experience would be considered an asset;

  • Be trustworthy, dependable and confident, have a positive attitude, have good judgement and be a role model for others;

  • Be able to effectively manage his/her time and prioritize work as required; and

  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/move heavy materials; and

  • Comfortable working in a shipyard environment, which may include exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
