CRANE OPERATOR

Full Time, Permanent


As a Shipyard Crane Operator, your primary role is to ensure proper rigging of loads, operate and control shipyard cranes efficiently and safely to facilitate the lifting, positioning, and transportation of heavy materials, components, and equipment within the shipyard. Your precision, attention to safety protocols, and adept handling of the crane machinery will be instrumental in supporting the shipbuilding and repair processes.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate A.F. Theriault & Son Ltd.’s Rough Terrain Mobile Cranes to lift, move, position or place equipment and/or materials as required while ensuring the safety of him/herself, the crane and any employees or equipment in the surrounding area (familiarity with crane’s limits and operating manual will be required);

  • The Crane Operator is responsible for the safety of all employees and machinery involved with any given lift. If, for any reason, the crane operator is not comfortable with the safety of himself, the crane or any employees or equipment in the surrounding area, he has the right to refuse the start or completion of any lift in his scope of work;

  • Perform pre-operational inspection and calculate crane capacities and weight in order to prepare rigging and hoisting properly;

  • Perform routine maintenance work on the cranes such as cleaning and lubricating as required (if any repairs which cannot be performed by the crane operator are required; they are to inform Senior Management of the required repairs);

  • Ensure that their log book is properly filled out and signed accordingly;

  • Ensure all chain falls, slings and any other rigging used in the yard are properly inspected. Ensure that any rigging which has failed inspection is taken out of commission;

  • Comply with A.F Theriault & Son Ltd. Policies and procedures and Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Follow safety protocols and maintain, use and wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the area you will be in or the operation or task you are about to conduct to prevent accidents. Ensure potential health and safety hazards are corrected or brought to the attention of Management and/or Health and Safety Committee to prevent accidents in the workplace;

  • Perform other duties as required;

  • Ensure that materials on jobs in hand are being correctly charged to the proper job numbers, activity codes and/or others;

  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed to complete project deadlines;

  • Willing to go to apprenticeship training if applicable;

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts.


Requirements

  • Must have a Mobile Crane Operator Class II Certification or higher valid in the Province of Nova Scotia;

  • An Apprentice Mobile Crane Operator can be hired if a certified mobile crane operator is already on staff and is able to sign off on the apprentice’s hours;

  • Must hold a valid driver’s license;

  • Must have good problem solving and mathematical skills;

  • Must be trustworthy, dependable and confident, possess good judgement and have a positive attitude as many different sectors of the shipyard are dependent on the operation of cranes. An organized individual capable of managing his/her time and efforts in an efficient manner is a necessity;

  • Able to move in narrow and restricted passageways, up/down steep and narrow ladders or stairways, and up and down antenna masts, marine slips, and gangways (onboard ships). Must be able to spend significant amount of time in his/her feet throughout the day;

  • Must be a team player which includes very good communication skills (verbal and hand signals);

  • Be able to work overtime hours as required; and

  • Be able to communicate in either English or French.
