INDUSTRIAL MECHANIC (MILLWRIGHT)

Full Time, Permanent


As a Shipyard Industrial Mechanic (Millwright), your primary responsibility is to ensure the efficient operation and maintenance of mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment within the shipyard. You will play a crucial role in supporting the shipbuilding and repair processes by diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of mechanical components, such as engines, propulsion systems, pumps, conveyors, and other machinery critical to shipyard operations.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform removal and installation of propulsion systems including rudders, propellers, shafts and bearing assemblies;

  • Perform alignment of all systems;

  • Complete removal and installation of steering systems;

  • Install fire suppression systems (typically CO2);

  • Conduct required maintenance as required on all mechanical systems;

  • Operate related equipment and tools which include but are not limited to forklifts, hoists, slings, grinders (portable and bench), cutting torches, hand tools, drills and punches;

  • Work in multiple environments from an indoor facility, elevated heights, which may include tasks performed on scaffolding, ladders, or other elevated structures, confined spaces within vessels, outside spaces with exposure to all elements;

  • Keep the shop/work site as a safe and clean environment to work in;

  • Comply with A.F Theriault & Son Ltd. Policies and procedures and Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.  Follow safety protocols and maintain, use and wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the area you will be in or the operation or task you are about to conduct to prevent accidents.  Ensure potential health and safety hazards are corrected or brought to the attention of Management and/or Health and Safety Committee in order to prevent accidents in the workplace;

  • Perform other duties as required;

  • Ensure that materials on jobs in hand are being correctly charged to the proper job numbers, activity codes and/or others;

  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed to complete project deadlines;

  • Willing to go to apprenticeship training if applicable;

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts;

Requirements

  • Red Seal Certification or Apprentice of Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) an asset;

  • Proven experience as a Mechanic required;

  • Be trustworthy, dependable and confident, have a positive attitude, have good judgement and be a role model for others;

  • Be able to work in a team environment;

  • Be able to read/understand blueprints and/or drawings;

  • Be conscientious in their work (attention to detail);

  • Be able to communicate in either English or French;

  • Be able to effectively manage his/her time and prioritize work as requires; and

  • Be able to work overtime hours as required.

  • Socket sets:

    • 3/8” drive ratchet, extensions, sockets 3/8” – 7/8” typical

    • ½” drive ratchet, strong arm bar, universal. Sockets 7/16” – 1 ¼”. Adaptors to 3/8”

  • Combination wrenches: 3/8” – 1 ¼”

  • Vice grips

  • Lineman plyers

  • Side cutter plyers

  • Pry bar

  • 8” and 14” pipe wrench

  • 6”, 8”, 10” and 12” adjustable wrenches.

  • Center punch and round nose punch

  • Chisel(s)

  • Tape measure

  • Steel ruler 6” or 12”

  • Ball peen hammer

  • Gasket scraper

  • Tin snips

  • Screwdrivers

  • Vernier caliper
