INDUSTRIAL COATINGS APPLICATOR

Full Time, Permanent


As a Shipyard Industrial Coatings Applicator, your primary responsibility is to apply protective coatings and finishes to various structures, vessels, and equipment within the shipyard. Your expertise in surface preparation, coating application, and quality assurance will be crucial in enhancing the durability, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appeal of shipyard assets, ultimately contributing to the longevity and performance of vessels.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares and cleans using appropriate tools and equipment, adhering to recognized industry surface preparation standards and practices;

  • Select appropriate coatings based on project specifications, surface type, and environmental conditions;

  • Reads and understands specifications and standards required to complete projects;

  • Apply coatings using a variety of techniques, including spray, brush, and roll-on methods;

  • Ensure proper thickness and uniformity of coatings, adhering to industry standards;

  • Operate and maintain equipment, such as spray guns, compressors, and mixing machines;

  • Collaborate with Project Managers/Supervisor to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines;

  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and cleaning to ensure optimal performance;

  • Maintain an organized work area, ensuring proper storage of coatings and equipment;

  • Work in multiple environments from an indoor facility, elevated heights, which may include tasks performed on scaffolding, ladders, or other elevated structures, confined spaces within vessels, outside spaces with exposure to all elements;

  • Keep the shop/work site as a safe and clean environment to work in;

  • Comply with A.F Theriault & Son Ltd. Policies and procedures and Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.  Follow safety protocols and maintain, use and wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the area you will be in or the operation or task you are about to conduct to prevent accidents.  Ensure potential health and safety hazards are corrected or brought to the attention of Management and/or Health and Safety Committee in order to prevent accidents in the workplace;

  • Perform other duties as required;

  • Ensure that materials on jobs in hand are being correctly charged to the proper job numbers, activity codes and/or others;

  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed to complete project deadlines;

  • Willing to go to apprenticeship training if applicable;

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts.

Requirements

  • High school, diploma or equivalent; training/experience in Industrial coatings is an asset.

  • Strong understanding of coating types, application techniques, and surface preparation.

  • Familiarity with various industrial surfaces, substrates, and their unique coating requirements.

  • Proficiency in using coating equipment and tools, such as spray guns and mixing machines; training will be provided.

  • Detail-oriented with excellent hand-eye coordination for precise application.

  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with Team Members, Project Managers and Supervisors.

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety protocols and guidelines.

  • Physical dexterity and ability to work in various positions, including bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods, often with your arms raised over your head.

  • Willingness to work in various environmental conditions and sometimes confined spaces, as well as heights.

  • Must be able to effectively manage his/her time and prioritize work as required.

  • Must be available to work overtime hours as required.
