HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

Full Time, Permanent


As a Shipyard Heavy Equipment Operator, your primary role is to operate and maneuver various heavy machinery and equipment within the shipyard to facilitate construction, repair, and maintenance activities related to maritime vessels. Your expertise in heavy equipment operation, precision, and commitment to safety will contribute to the efficient and successful execution of shipbuilding and repair projects.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment, including cranes, forklifts, loaders, and other specialized machinery used in shipyard operations;

  • Safely transport, lift, and position materials and components to support shipbuilding, repair, and maintenance activities;

  • Conduct pre-operational inspections of heavy equipment, identify and report any issues, and perform routine maintenance as needed.  Report maintenance requirements to the Foreman.

  • Coordinate with shipyard personnel to ensure smooth workflow and efficient project execution, ensuring seamless integration with ongoing construction and repair activities;

  • Execute tasks with precision, following project specifications and engineering drawings to ensure accurate placement and movement of materials;

  • Calculate load weights and ensure proper weight distribution when lifting and transporting materials to prevent accidents and damage;

  • Work in multiple environments from an indoor facility to outside spaces with exposure to all elements;

  • Keep the work site as a safe and clean environment to work in;

  • Comply with A.F Theriault & Son Ltd. Policies and procedures and Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.  Follow safety protocols and maintain, use and wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the area you will be in or the operation or task you are about to conduct to prevent accidents.  Ensure potential health and safety hazards are corrected or brought to the attention of Management and/or Health and Safety Committee in order to prevent accidents in the workplace;

  • Perform other duties as required;

  • Ensure that materials on jobs in hand are being correctly charged to the proper job numbers, activity codes and/or others;

  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed to complete project deadlines;

  • Willing to go to apprenticeship training if applicable;

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts.


Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator an asset;

  • Be trustworthy, dependable and confident, have a positive attitude, have good judgement and be a role model for others;

  • Be able to work in a team environment;

  • Be able to read/understand blueprints and/or drawings;

  • Be conscientious in their work (attention to detail);

  • Be able to communicate in either English or French;

  • Be able to effectively manage his/her time and prioritize work as requires; and

  • Be able to work overtime hours as required.
