FIBERGLASS LAMINATOR

Full Time, Permanent


As a Shipyard Fiberglass Laminator, your primary objective is to contribute to the construction, repair, and maintenance of vessels by expertly applying fiberglass materials to various structures and components within the shipyard. Your proficiency in fiberglass lamination techniques will play a pivotal role in enhancing the strength, durability, and overall integrity of fiberglass-reinforced components used in shipbuilding and repair projects.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Apply layers of plastic resin to mold surfaces prior to placement of fiberglass mats, repeating layers until products have the desired thicknesses;

  • Cut and lay down fiberglass materials according to design specifications and blueprints;

  • Mix and apply resin and other bonding agents onto fiberglass layers, ensuring even distribution;

  • Bond wood reinforcing strips to decks and cabin structures of watercraft, using resin-saturated fiberglass; 

  • Operate hand tools and equipment such as rollers, brushes, and sprayers to smooth surface areas and remove air bubbles from laminated surfaces;

  • Monitor curing process and make adjustments as necessary to ensure proper adhesion and quality;

  • Trim excess materials and perform finishing touches to achieve the desired shape and appearance;

  • Repair or modify damaged or defective glass-fiber parts, checking thicknesses, densities, and contours to ensure a close fit after repair;

  • Ensure accurate implementation of project specifications;

  • Able to move in narrow and restricted passageways, up/down steep and narrow ladders or stairways, and up and down antenna masts, marine slips, and gangways (onboard ships);

  • Inspect finished products for defects, inconsistencies, or imperfections and make necessary repairs;

  • Work in multiple environments from an indoor facility, elevated heights, which may include tasks performed on scaffolding, ladders, or other elevated structures, confined spaces within vessels, outside spaces with exposure to all elements;

  • Keep the shop/work site as a safe and clean environment to work in;

  • Comply with A.F Theriault & Son Ltd. Policies and procedures and Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.  Follow safety protocols and maintain, use and wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the area you will be in or the operation or task you are about to conduct to prevent accidents.  Ensure potential health and safety hazards are corrected or brought to the attention of Management and/or Health and Safety Committee in order to prevent accidents in the workplace;

  • Perform other duties as required;

  • Ensure that materials on jobs in hand are being correctly charged to the proper job numbers, activity codes and/or others;

  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed to complete project deadlines;

  • Willing to go to apprenticeship training if applicable;

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts.


Requirements

  • Physical dexterity and ability to work in various positions, including bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods, often with your arms raised over your head.

  • Must have good knowledge of fiberglass, vessels, and gel coat; training will be provided.

  • Must be trustworthy, dependable and confident, have a positive attitude, have good judgement and be a role model for others.

  • Must be able to work in a team environment or unsupervised.

  • Must be able to effectively manage his/her time and prioritize work as required.

  • Must be available to work overtime hours as required to complete projects or meet deadlines.
