ELECTRICIAN

As a Shipyard Electrician, your primary objective is to contribute to the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems within vessels during their assembly, renovation, or repair within the shipyard. Your expertise in electrical installations, diagnostics, and adherence to safety standards will be essential in ensuring the reliability, functionality, and safety of electrical systems onboard vessels.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complete installation of electrical components where required such as switchboards, distribution panels, control panels, and electrical cable;

  • Install conduits or cable trays to bulkheads with brackets and screws, using hand tools, and threads wires through conduit to terminals; for example, connection boxes, circuit breakers, voltage regulators, and switch panels;

  • Strip insulation from wire ends and solders ends to terminals, using stripping pliers and soldering iron. Connects power-supply circuits to radio, radar, sonar, fire control, and other electronic equipment;

  • Test electrical characteristics such as, voltage, resistance, and phase angle, in circuits, using voltmeters, ohmmeters, and phase rotation indicators;

  • May also construct instrument panels, using hand tools, rulers, dividers, and power drills, following specifications;

  • Troubleshoot electrical equipment and circuits using appropriate test equipment to detect and effect required maintenance, repairs, or replacement requirements;

  • Perform maintenance and repair of generators, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, electrical motors, distribution panels, alarm and lighting circuits;

  • Conduct insulation resistance measurements of electrical cables to determine condition and effects repairs or replacements as required;

  • Set-up, monitor and maintain shore power connections for vessels;

  • Maintain adequate inventories of electrical spare parts and requisitions replacements as required;

  • Work in multiple environments from an indoor facility, elevated heights, which may include tasks performed on scaffolding, ladders, or other elevated structures, confined spaces within vessels, outside spaces with exposure to all elements;

  • Keep the shop/work site as a safe and clean environment to work in;

  • Comply with A.F Theriault & Son Ltd. Policies and procedures and Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.  Follow safety protocols and maintain, use and wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the area you will be in or the operation or task you are about to conduct to prevent accidents.  Ensure potential health and safety hazards are corrected or brought to the attention of Management and/or Health and Safety Committee in order to prevent accidents in the workplace;

  • Perform other duties as required;

  • Ensure that materials on jobs in hand are being correctly charged to the proper job numbers, activity codes and/or others;

  • Willing to work overtime and weekends as needed to complete project deadlines;

  • Willing to go to apprenticeship training if applicable; and

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts.


Requirements

  • Proven experience as an electrician required.

  • Diploma/Certificate from accredited post-secondary institution is considered an asset.

  • Must be trustworthy, dependable and confident, have a positive attitude, have good judgement and be a role model for others.

  • Must be able to work in a team environment.

  • Must be able to read/understand blueprints and/or drawings.

  • Be conscientious in their work (attention to detail).

  • Must be able to communicate in either English or French.

  • Must be able to effectively manage his/her time and prioritize work as required.

  • Must be available to work overtime hours as required.
